Wayne Rogers never signed a morals clause in his contract and used that quiet leverage to simply not return for season four when it became clear that the show\u2019s creative center of gravity had shifted so completely toward Hawkeye that Trapper John had become a supporting character in his own storyline \u2014 a professional grievance he has discussed with the refreshing directness of someone who was right about what was happening and knew it and never felt the need to pretend otherwise.
