The Next 365 Days ending explained: Delving into that ambiguous finale

How does Laura and Massimo’s story end?
The Next 365 Days brings Netflix’s popular sex movie trilogy to a close, and it’s as dramatic as you hoped it would be.

Laura and Massimo’s love story was never drama-free, that’s for sure, but we never expected the ending of The Next 365 Days to leave us with one major question. Since Netflix hasn’t confirmed yet if the story will continue, fans might never get the answer.

Following the shocking events of 365 Days: This Day, the third movie in Netflix’s 365 Daystrilogy saw Laura and Massimo attempt to rebuild a relationship that had already faced some serious challenges, such as Laura being shot.

We had thought that this would all eventually lead to the duo being together by the end of the movie (which is one of Netflix’s best sex-themed movies), but The Next 365 Days had something more surprising up its sleeve that left viewers desperate for a (yet-to-be-confirmed) fourth movie.

As we wait for news of a potential 365 Days 4, let’s dive under the sheets to unpack that ambiguous finale.

While Laura might have survived the shocking finale of This Day, the events of the sequel have definitely had a major impact on Laura and Massimo’s relationship. Laura is doing her best to move on, even telling Nacho to forget her, but it seems Massimo can’t.

Laura and Massimo obviously still have some sexy times, but after they fight over Laura not telling Massimo she lost their baby (at the end of the first movie), they couldn’t be further apart. Both disappear into their work, Massimo with his gangster life and Laura with her fashion brand.

Together with Olga, Laura heads to Portugal to attend the Lagos fashion fair where she runs into Nacho’s sister Amelia. She persuades Laura to give Nacho time to explain himself, insisting he’s not a bad person, he’s “just loyal to his father”.

Nacho reunites with Laura and after telling her that he loves her, it ends exactly as you’d expect with a lengthy bonk on the beach. Unlike Massimo, Nacho is more than happy to let Laura make her own decisions. He even tells her that he saved Massimo’s life by killing Anna at the end of the sequel “because you love him”.

I don’t want my happiness at the cost of your suffering. I want you to want me… I will wait for you, until you’re ready,” Nacho tells Laura, promising to give her the time to decide what she really wants.

Massimo is waiting for Laura back at her hotel, but perhaps as a sign he’s maturing, agrees to go back to Sicily to give Laura space. She goes to visit her parents where she confesses to being in love with Nacho and admits she doesn’t know what to do.

Her mother gives her advice that she “must be selfish in a relationship”, adding: “If you put your own happiness first, you’ll do whatever it takes to make it last.”

After a fantasy threesome with Massimo and Nacho (where they both kiss too), Laura heads back to Sicily where she’s warned by Olga that Massimo knows about Laura’s sexytimes with Nacho. Olga wants her to run, but Laura says she won’t be scared of Massimo.

It’s time for the big emotional showdown…

The Next 365 Days ending explained: Does Laura stay with Massimo?

Laura gets a surprise when she arrives back in Sicily as Nacho has disguised himself (with a hat, basically) to be her driver. He spills his heart to her and talks of their potential future together, but she tells him that she still “needs more time”. “I will wait,” Nacho replies and they part ways at her house.

Massimo is waiting for Laura on the beach, but instead of being full of rage, he’s surprisingly philosophical. He actually knew about Nacho all along and is regretful that Laura felt she couldn’t come to him when she lost their baby: “That you had to deal with it all alone, it has destroyed me.”

“When I was a child, my dad used to read me a book. I still remember one sentence, a little parable. I didn’t really understand it back then. But now I do. ‘If you really love something, just let it go. If it comes back, it’s yours forever. If it doesn’t, it was never meant to be’,” he recalls.

Laura tells Massimo he had a “wonderful father” and says that he will be too “one day” and as they stare longingly at each other, Massimo asks: “Are you back, baby girl?”

And that’s it.

We don’t get an answer as to what Laura has decided, and the 365 Days movie trilogy ends on this unanswered question. Whether you think Laura decided to give Massimo another shot, went back to Nacho or perhaps decided to live the single life is entirely up to you.

As mentioned above, there’s still been no word about whether we’ll get a fourth movie.

Fans did take the below post by Michele Morrone as speculation that Laura and Massimo will return, but we think he’s just teasing Laura’s decision and whether Massimo would be sad or happy.

“The end of something is always a little bit sad.. but.. who knows…,” he wrote.

How does 365 Days book series end?

The Next 365 Days has a dramatically different ending to the book series that the trilogy has been based on.

In that third book, there’s all sorts of stuff going on including a dead dog, another kidnapping and a heart transplant. In fact, the only real connection is that Laura has a motorbike like in the movie.

The book ends with Laura choosing to be with Nacho, but that is after Massimo holds her against her will, drugs her and tries to get her pregnant. It’s not really a surprise she escaped with Nacho in that scenario. The epilogue shows they have a daughter together, while Massimo has given up and agreed to a divorce.

If that was the alternative, we’ll take this ambiguous ending of the movie trilogy over that any day. Could it mean we’ll get a fourth365 Days movie? Unfortunately, we still don’t know.

The Next 365 Days is available to watch now on Netflix.
